New Wellness Director: Meet Jacob Garvin

Jacob Garvin websiteNew Wellness Director, Jacob Garvin, grew up in Batesville from an early age and he and his family were charter members of the Y until moving to Iowa after college. “Jacob’s master’s degree in Sports/Health Science, his sincere compassion for helping people of all ages, demographics, his experience and accomplishments while serving in the Air Force, his knowledge from owning a fitness facility, and his work with middle school students and senior adults will add many enrichments to our Y and community,” says Angie Johnson, Southeastern Indiana YMCA Executive Director. “Jacob will also be leading Youth Strength and Conditioning programs, youth basketball in the fall and winter, boot camps, as well as a 3 on 3 tournament in September,” Johnson added.

Garvin is a 2001 graduate of Batesville High School and 2005 graduate from Indiana University, and possesses a Master’s degree from American Military University. He served as an active duty Air Force Cyber Warfare Officer for four years, and is completing a four-year reserve commitment. Before recently moving back to Batesville, Garvin and his wife Sarah started their own gym in Muscatine, Iowa called Crossfit. This gym exponentially grew from 2011 to 2016, as the focus was on bringing natural movements such as deadlifting, squatting, pushing, pressing and pulling to people of all ages and abilities. They partnered with the local school corporations to lead physical education classes, and Garvin partnered with the local community college to teach a weight-training course. His credentials include Crossfit and AFAA personal training certifications, as well as USA Weightlifting. Garvin and his wife Sarah have two young sons. He has been an active member of Big Brothers Big Sisters for the last five years, and is inspired by the Y’s mission to bring a healthy spirit, mind, and body to all.

Be sure to welcome Jacob Garvin to the YMCA!
